Protecting your Pet in Winter: Tips to Keep Them Cozy and Healthy

As the cold winter months approach, it's important to remember that some of our furry friends need extra care to stay warm and comfortable.  Just like us, our pets can be sensitive to the chilly weather and may require some extra things to keep them warm and cozy. Let’s discuss some tips and tricks to help you keep your pet warm during winter.

Provide Adequate Shelter

One of the best ways to keep your pet warm is to ensure they have a comfortable and insulated shelter. If your pet spends most of their time outdoors, make sure they have a well-built doghouse or a cozy insulated shelter that protects them from harsh winds, rain and frosty weather. Their shelter should be elevated off the ground to avoid contact with cold surfaces and provide extra warmth.

Layer Up with Coats for your Pet

Dress your pet in appropriate clothing for the area we are in. New Zealand can be very cold at times so making sure you have a great jacket that fits your pet well and provides enough warmth is a great investment. A jacket that covers your pet's chest will help with those chilly winter winds too!

Provide Warm Bedding

Pets love a warm and snug bed to curl up in during winter. Thick bedding materials that provide insulation from the cold floor, blankets, heated beds, or even a pile of towels can do wonders in keeping your pet warm and comfortable during chilly nights.

Limit Outdoor Time

During extreme cold weather you might need to limit your pet’s time outdoors. Dogs might need shorter and more frequent walks to relieve themselves. When heading outside, make sure your dog is properly dressed and always dry them off to prevent them from getting chilled if it’s raining. Some small breed and short haired dogs are more susceptible to the cold and may require extra care.

Protect Paws from the Elements

The cold weather can be harsh on your pet’s paws. Frost or ice on sidewalks or roads can cause discomfort or even injuries. Protect your pet’s paws by using pet safe paw balms or booties.

Watch for Signs of Hypothermia

Symptoms of hypothermia in pets include intense shivering, lethargy, pale gums and shallow breathing. If you suspect your pet is experiencing hypothermia, wrap them in warm blankets, and seek veterinary help.

Keeping your pet warm and comfortable during winter is essential for their overall health and well-being. By providing them with proper shelter, appropriate clothing, warm bedding, and limiting their time outdoors, you can ensure they are comfortable even in the coldest months.

Remember to always monitor your pet for signs of discomfort and seek veterinary care if needed. With these tips, you can create a cozy and safe environment for your furry companion to enjoy the winter season to the fullest.
