Commonly asked questions about Gabapentin:
What is Gabapentin?
Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant medication primarily used to treat partial seizures and neuropathic pain.
What should I know about Gabapentin?
Do not stop the use of gabapentin abruptly without consulting your pet's veterinarian. Rapid discontinuation may lead to withdrawal-precipitated seizures if using the product for seizure treatment. Gabapentin should be used with caution in animals that have renal insufficiency. Dosage adjustments may be required. Speak with your veterinarian regarding any dosage adjustments. Use extreme caution with use of an oral solution (Neurontin®) in dogs because it contains 300mg/mL of xylitol. Xylitol can cause low blood sugar or liver damage in dogs at higher doses. If you miss giving your pet the dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal schedule. Do not double up on doses.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Gabapentin?
Sedation and drowsiness ataxia dizziness peripheral oedema are side effects. Report excess sedation or uncoordinated muscle movements to your pet's veterinarian.
